White Willow
White Willow is a tree In Europe and Asia with leaves that are made of what look like white hairs. It is thought that the ancient Egyptians and Greeks both used White Willow bark as medicine for pain and inflammation.
White Willow bark is unique in that its primary active ingredient, Salicin, cannot be synthesized without causing problems with stomach acid, so the natural bark itself is always used for treatment instead. The development of synthetic Salicin also led to the invention of Aspirin, though Aspirin is also known to cause stomach lining issues.
What is White Willow Bark Used For?
White Willow Bark is known to treat pain and inflammation for a wide range of symptoms including:
- Joint Pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Back Pain
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
In addition, White Willow bark is known for its ability to reduce pain and fever due to flu and other illnesses. Unlike Aspirin, White Willow back does not appear to cause any additional health issues or problems with stomach lining, because naturally created Salicin does not become its acid form until after it has been absorbed into the stomach.
There has even been research that White Willow back and Salicin is more effective than Aspirin, and that a smaller dose can produce similar effects.
How Safe is White Willow Bark?
White Willow Bark has very few side effects, none unique to its chemical makeup. Theoretically, it may produce the same side effects as Aspirin, but little research has been done to either confirm or deny those claims, and at present they do not appear to be showing any signs of side effects.
It should not be taken before or after surgery, or by people with Peptic ulcers, as White Willow will prevent inflammation which could cause excess bleeding. Pregnant women should generally stay away from any anti-inflammatory, aspirin-like medications. Also, refraining from doubling up on anti-inflammatory medications (ie do not take Aspirin and white willow together) is advised.
Overall, White Willow bark is one of the safest supplements one can take for joint pain with no known side effects. Only 120 - 240 milligrams of Salicin is needed to see optimum effects.
White Willow bark is a powerful herbal supplement for preventing joint pain. Its ability to reduce pain and inflammation has been known for centuries, and it continues to be used today as a helpful, natural, side effect free supplement designed to reduce joint pain and osteoarthritis.
